WHAT ARE TOOTH EXTRACTIONS?
While board-certified dentist Dr. Mohit Shardha makes every attempt to rescue and maintain your natural teeth, there are instances where a tooth might need to be taken out. A simple extraction removes a tooth that's visible over the gumline. This is typically the approach used for a tooth that's damaged or decayed and cannot be repaired. A surgical extraction removes a tooth that has yet to erupt from the gums. Surgical extractions are frequently performed to remove impacted teeth, like wisdom teeth, that don't have sufficient room to fit into your mouth. Whatever the reason for getting an extraction at Zensmiles, our staff will give you the best care. Our Frisco, TX practice offers multiple sedation methods, like nitrous oxide and oral conscious sedation, which means you can stay comfortable during your treatment. WHO CAN BENEFIT FROM TOOTH EXTRACTIONS?
If your tooth was broken or damaged by decay, Dr. Shardha will make every effort to fix it using a crown, dental bonding, or a filling. However, when a tooth is too far gone, it may need to be removed to keep the infection from spreading and to conserve the health of the rest of the teeth. You may also need an extraction to address your third molars, commonly called wisdom teeth, that grow around the ages of 17 – 25. In older kids, infant teeth that have not fallen out naturally may need to be pulled so that they do not obstruct the permanent teeth coming in. If you're getting orthodontics or considering Invisalign, you may require a simple extraction to make room for other teeth when they move into their proper positions.
What To Expect
Dental extractions are done in our office using local anesthesia to numb the area near the tooth being removed. A dual-trained anesthesiologist, Dr. Shardha can offer you additional sedation options to keep you calm and comfortable throughout the procedure and to help you not remember the procedure. Once you're ready, Dr. Shardha will begin the procedure. For a simple extraction, he will loosen the tooth with a special device before removing it. Meanwhile, a surgical extraction involves making incisions in your gums to access the impacted tooth. If necessary, the tooth may be broken into smaller pieces so it can be removed more easily. Once extracted, Dr. Shardha will close the incision.
